March 2009 Newsletter

This is the last newsletter with this format. For April I am going to totally separate the events from the newsletter. So if you live out of the area and don't want to read about events you can't attend anyway you can subscribe only to the newsletter and just get 'news'. You are in control of what you want to receive from me.

As always please feel free to ask questions and send me events you know are going on in our area so I can put them on the calendar and the events letter.

Green this month in honor of all my Irish friends and in hopes of sweet-talking spring out real soon.

Let me know if there are subjects of interest you would like to see. Happy to provide if I can.

My best,
hugs

Product Fair at the March Potluck

March is the month we do product fair.  For those of you who have never been to the product fair let me explain.  Anyone selling a product or service is welcome to use a table and display what they have. It should certainly be people or earth friendly.  The vendors will be given about 2 minutes to explain thier product right after we are done eating and then the rest of the evening everyone will wander, get more information from the booths  and possibly purchase.

So if you have a product please call me to let me know you need a table 517-882-1033 or e-mail hihomin@comcast.net   You will need a supply of handout material for those not prepared to buy that night or if you are service oriented so people can find your business.  Could you make sure I get a copy of your contact information that night because someone always calls and asks for the info on someone who was a vendor.

If you don't have a product bring your wallet, your cash, your credit card and be prepared to shop.  Ask lots of questions and find the products that will fit well into your lifestyle.

March Book Review

Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices by John Heinerman is written with enough humor to keep you reading even if you already found the juice you were looking for.  It is written by a medical anthropologist who has traveled the world observing people and finding out what they use to heal themselves.  The funny thing is his "juicing" is with the VitaMix and not with what we would normally call a juicer.  The contents are set up with both the item being juiced and then another section for health problems and their juice solutions.  The downside of the book is a few cases where milk products are included but you can easily leave those out or substitute a nut milk.  This book is where I learned to use parsley for allergies and have had many people find relief by adding this to their diet.  I enjoyed the book just for the stories the added bonus was the knowledge I gained about what fruits or vegetables to use for what conditions.  You can get Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Juices by clicking on the blue words and it will take you to Amazon for ordering.  John has two other books which are equally good.  Heinerman New Encyclopedia of Fruits & Vegetables, Revised & Expanded Edition and Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Herbs & Spices .  I have those and find them just as informative.

Raw Opportunity

We are ready to share our live food home on a 55 acre sustainable, self-sufficient farm for fair energy exchange. It would be nice to have positive people with carpentry skills. Please email Janet and Mark at rawnursejanet@yahoo.com

Finding it tough to stay raw?

Believe me I can relate to this problem.  Some days staying raw is very very hard.  There are days when I just give in and days when I am able to resist.  The trick is to not dwell on it and move on.  If a friend told you they had done a little back sliding would you tell them it's OK?  Of course you would so give yourself a break as well.  Commit to moving forward and don't look back.  It's in the past and it won't help to dwell on it.  Just don't make the mistake of thinking you've already blown it for the day so you might as well keep going.  NO, get right back at it for the rest of the day.

Here are a few tips that seem to help me:
1- Have a list of items you won't ever eat.  For me it's milk and meat.  I like to add sugar to the list but on rare occasions I'll have a bite of something.  It is getting harder and harder to eat something bad because I feel so yucky when I do.
2- sugar is at the top of  THE worst "food".  Make it a priority to get this out of your life.  It is an anti-nutrient, stealing vitamins and minerals from your body just to get it out of your system.  It is acid forming and immune suppressing.  Stop eating it in all things, read labels.  If it is a prepared food there is most likely sugar in it.
3- Make an effort to have things on hand to eat.  Make a salad and a pate that will last a week. It gives you something on hand that is fast.  You can then use the pate to make a taco or a veggie dip or a raw sushi or put it on top of salad.  You don't have to eat it the same way every day. Have a fermented food on hand like a sauerkraut and eat just a small amount every day.
4-Get a buddy.  I can not stress enough how important this can be.  Especially in the beginning.  When your buddy calls and says they are being tempted and they need help ask them the following questions.  These questions were developed by Victoria Boutenko.  If you employ this method for a while it will become habit to ask yourself these questions and then you will need your buddy less and less.
  • How long have you been raw?
  • How do you feel?
  • Tell me why you went raw.
  • What else can you do?
  • Are you feeling more in control?
Just having another person involved is normally enough to help you over a hump and make a better choice.  If you are interested in this ask me more or read the book "12 Steps to Raw Food"

5- Have frozen fruits on hand.  Buy lots of bananas at the day old table or when they are on sale, peel them, put them on a cookie sheet and freeze.  Then put them in a zip lock bag.  Buy organic frozen fruit or go pick your own in season and put extras in the freezer.  Then when you are browsing for something to eat you can make a smoothie.  If you have some greens on hand you can make it a green smoothie.

I hope that helps a bit there must be tons of ideas out there.  Send me your favorite and I'll publish them next month.
