Surprising Payoff of a Simple Goal

Here is a rather interesting little article taken from the Reader's Digest Sept 09 edition

Whether you believe you have some purpose to fulfill on earth or just have trips you plan to take and books you want to read, you  have a survival edge over people with fewer goals.  So say researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago who interviewed more than 1,200 older adults.  Elders with sure intentions and goals were about half as likely as aimless seniors to die over the five-year follow-up.  Researchers aren't sure why--but there's some evidence that feeling a sense of purpose may curb stress hormones.

So set a goal and start working on it.  You'll live longer.

Spotlight of the Month: Farm Animals Need You to Protect Them from Cruelty!
In the next general election, Michiganians will have the opportunity to vote to greatly improve the lives of millions of farm animals by voting YES on the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act -- but only if we have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The measure would simply ensure that farm animals in Michigan are given enough room to turn around and extend their limbs. This modest requirement would prevent battery cages, gestation crates and veal crates -- three of the most inhumane forms of confinement on factory farms.

Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine and Oregon have banned gestation crates. Arizona, California, Colorado and Maine also have banned veal crates. Major companies are moving away from supporting battery cages and veal and gestation crates, and California and the European Union have banned all three.

Factory farms are among the most serious causes of resource depletion, pollution and global warming. The cruel confinement of animals on factory farms makes them more susceptible to diseases. It's bad for them, and it's bad for us.

We need you to help collect signatures for the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act! For more information and to get involved, please contact Jill Fritz at jfritz@humanesociety.org

At first glance, it might seem like a simple task to avoid animal products in your food if you've elected to do so. After all, meat, dairy, eggs, fish, honey, etc. need no introduction. Not so fast. There's more out there (or should I say "in there"?) than even the most seasoned vegan could imagine. Who knew the dirty little secret behind something called lipase? It's an enzyme from the stomach and tongue glands of calves, kids, and lambs found in some vitamin supplements.

Selecting and Storing Mangoes

When selecting a mango there are a few key qualities to look for. Knowing when the mango will be used will help.

    * Look for a firm, unblemished skin, usually with bright colours.
    * If the mango is to be eaten that day, smell for a sweet, tropical ambrosial scent coming from the stem end. Give a light but firm squeeze. The flesh should have some give.
    * If the mango is being bought for later use, it should be firmer fleshed with a tight skin and its colour may be a little dull. To ripen, it should be kept at room temperature open to the air for several days.
    * The mango is ready to eat when the skin is brightly coloured, the flesh is soft and the aroma is sweet.
    * Mangoes should not be refrigerated during the ripening process.
    * Fully ripe mangoes can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.

Understanding Candida

from RawFamily.com

Last week our friend, Dr. Douglas Graham made a stop in our home town on his lecture tour. We had a great time with Dr. Graham and his two helpers, Simon and Grant. While we were enjoying fresh tomatoes from the market, our conversation shifted to fruit consumption and Candida. Dr. Graham’s understanding of this common condition is absolutely brilliant. I agree with Dr. Graham’s research and have witnessed positive results in reversing Candida symptoms by reducing fat consumption. We wanted this information to reach as many people as possible so Valya interviewed Dr Graham on camera. Here is his seven minute interview for everyone to enjoy.
